VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, has many benefits for businesses. Primarily, VoIP works as an Internet telephone service, and allows different people to connect via voice and video messages, either one to one, or as part of large networks and group conversations. The speed by which VoIP connects and stabilises a connection has also improved in the past few years, to the point that consumer and commercial usages can be maintained across different platforms. In terms of the benefits of VoIP for businesses, these range from cost effectiveness through to inter office communication, and include the flexibility of multi platform connections, scalability and broader network integration.
A VoIP system is much cheaper than a traditional telephone and networked call service. This is particularly the case for international calls, as well as more generally across different local networks. Overall, VoIP telephony can make up to 80% in savings from an older, wire based communications system. These cost savings can be passed onto other areas of the business, and can help to boost communications as a whole across a business.
Most VoIP systems allow for free inter office calls. This makes it much easier to maintain communications within an office in terms of branch meetings, and also enables calls between different branches of a business. Conference calls become simplified, and the cost of doing remote business is significantly reduced. Having a VoIP system in place consequently means that large decisions can be sped up, and productivity increased.
One of the key benefits of improvements to VoIP systems in terms of connectivity and extra features is that calls can now be maintained across different platforms, which include laptops, phones and tablets. This portability means that business trips can be coordinated with a home office, while emergencies can be dealt with via phone messages. Call flexibility similarly extends to client relationships, with people able to take calls at different times of the day, and at different locations.
It is possible for businesses to scale up their VoIP packages over time. A key feature for small businesses that want to gradually add in features, over time a VoIP package can include web inboxes, discounted and free calls, security features like caller IDs, and synchronisation with an overall virtual network for a business. Costs can consequently be managed and expanded depending on the needs of a business, with virtual expansions via online credit and cloud services offering flexibility.
VoIP offers the chance for businesses to create an integrated communications service that routes all messages through a central system. Voice and video calls can be connected up to email servers, as well as real time messaging and other interfaces. This increased consolidation of communications ensures that calls can be made more consistent, and that staff can easily access client information when dealing with calls. From a management perspective, this integration also means that performance levels can be recorded and monitored for future changes and reports.

Statement by Emer Costello MEP
Dublin Labour MEP Emer Costello is urging the European Commission to act on the report* published today on insurance against flooding and other natural catastrophes, which concluded that, 'there are cases where NatCat [natural catastrophe] insurance markets do not seem to fully cope with existing risks'.
"Having your home flooded is an extremely traumatic experience. Insurance companies cannot continue to simply walk away from their obligations to householders, especially when public authorities are acting to reduce the risk of flooding.
"A recent survey carried out by my colleague Kevin Humphreys TD of 1,000 homes flanking the river Dodder found that it was all but impossible to get flood insurance in the area, despite the fact that millions have been spent on flood defences along the Dodder over the past four years.
"The aim of this report produced by the Commission's scientific and technical unit, the Joint Research Centre (JRC), was not to make recommendations for future European policy action, but rather to assemble publicly available information on national insurance practices for natural catastrophes.
"Now that the JRC has done its job, the Commission must respond. I know that it has been considering a possible initiative on this issue for a number of years. Its 2009 White Paper on Adapting to Climate Change suggested publicly-supported insurance schemes where no insurance exists and concluded that, due to the cross-border effects of climate change, there may be merit in promoting an EU-wide insurance scheme.
"The Commission should now give serious consideration to coming forward with proposals for EU legislation guaranteeing insurance cover for flood-risk homes, particularly where public authorities are complying with their commitments under the EU Floods Directive, which requires local authorities to assess and map areas at risk of flooding and to taking action to reduce the risk.
"I do take issue with the Report's finding that the Irish flood insurance market is 'efficiently developed'. I would point out that the cited source of the information on which this conclusion is the Comit? Europ?en des Assurances, which represents national insurance bodies such as the Irish Insurance Federation in Brussels. As the authors themselves admit, there is very much a need for 'more and better data' on this issue.
"I would encourage Brian Hayes, the Minister of State responsible at the Department of Finance, to ensure that the Government is fully engaged in the follow-up to this report at European level. I am determined to continue raising it with the Commission until the insurance industry lives up to its obligations."

LONDON (Reuters) - The Financial Services Authority will deliver a stinging attack on the banks that rigged the Libor interest rate and the trade body that oversees it on Friday and lay out a 10-point plan to repair the discredited benchmark rather than replace it.
Martin Wheatley, managing director of the FSA, will press the "reset button" to restore the integrity of the interest rate that Barclays was fined a record 290 million pounds in June for manipulating.
"The system is broken and needs a complete overhaul," Wheatley says in a speech made available in advance.
"The disturbing events we have uncovered in the manipulation of Libor have severely damaged our confidence and our trust -- it has torn the very fabric that our financial system is built on."
Royal Bank of Scotland is expected to be next to settle Libor charges, with other banks to follow.
Wheatley's review marks the first step towards overhauling the system of setting rates which are used as a benchmark for pricing trillions of dollars worth of financial products ranging from complex derivatives to simple home loans.
Confidence in the way Libor is set has been undermined by the fixing scandal that involves some of the world's biggest banks and traders in London, New York and Singapore.
Users of Libor -- the London interbank offered rate -- will breathe a sigh of relief that Wheatley has decided on no alternative rate and has instead opted for "comprehensive" reform of the existing benchmark.
Asset management firms say they feared a rapid move to a new rate risked disrupting millions of contracts for credit cards and home and business loans that stretch out many years.
Libor is a suite of 150 benchmarks covering many currencies and maturities, compiled from a panel of banks who quote a rate at which they believe they could borrow from one another.
It is used in financial transactions worth at least $300 trillion (184.7 trillion pounds) globally and will in future be directly regulated by the FSA.
CARELESS
Governance and oversight will be stripped from a "careless" British Bankers' Association and handed to an independent body that will be selected by open tender.
"The British Bankers' Association clearly failed to properly oversee the Libor setting process and should take no further role in the administration and governance of Libor," Wheatley says.
The BBA said it worked closely with Wheatley on his review and it has strongly stated the need for greater regulatory oversight of Libor and tougher sanctions for manipulation.
"The absolute priority now for everyone is to ensure the provision of a reliable benchmark which has the confidence and support of all users, contributors and global regulators, and we will work closely with the government and regulatory bodies to ensure this," the BBA said.
The tender will be run by an independent committee headed by Baroness Hogg, who chairs the Financial Reporting Council, the independent British corporate governance regulator.
Thomson Reuters, parent company of Reuters, has a contract to calculate and distribute Libor rates for the BBA.
The British government commissioned Wheatley to report on reforming Libor and is expected to back his findings in full. Legislative changes will be inserted into the financial services bill now going through parliament.
"Today's independent report is very clear -- the self-regulation of Libor has failed. The government will respond, in full, once parliament returns," Clark said in a statement.
NO MORE GAMING
Too many traders at banks had an interest in "gaming the system" by trying to push Libor higher or lower to make a deal more profitable and pocket a bigger bonus, Wheatley says.
"They were allowed to do this freely with no oversight ... What's more and worse, is that we are not talking about a few rogue individuals, but a systemic problem."
Criminal sanctions will be introduced to punish manipulation and there will also be strict and detailed processes for verifying submissions against hard market data.
More banks will be encouraged to submit Libor quotes, using "new powers of regulatory compulsion" if necessary.
Transactions will be recorded with regular external audits of banks who participate. Bank employees making Libor submissions will have to be approved by the FSA.
Banks will have to comply with submission guidelines from Wheatley straight away until the new independent body is appointed to run Libor.
Over the coming year, the number of Libor rates will be whittled down from 150 to 20 by ditching those based on Australian, Canadian and New Zealand dollars, as well as Swedish and Danish krone.
Maturities covering four, five, seven, eight, 10 and 11 months will be scrapped, leaving 20 rates based on short maturities in currencies such as the U.S. dollar and the pound.

Intel just outed its new Atom SoC, and at its tablet event in San Francisco today, the company had a whole slew of slates packing the Clover Trail silicon on hand. Dell's Latitude 10, the ASUS Tablet 810, Acer's Iconia W510 and W700, Lenovo's ThinkPad 2, the HP Envy x2 and Samsung's Series 5 were all there. However, it was the handsome slice of Windows 8 from ZTE that really caught our attention. Called the V98, it has a 10.1-inch, 1366 x 768 LCD on top of an aluminum chassis with a beveled edge similar to what you'd find on a white iPhone 5. Beneath that handsome exterior is the aforementioned Intel Z2760 chipset, 64GB of ROM, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (plus a microSD slot if you need more digital space). There's 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, tri-band UMTS and quad-band GSM radios, plus NFC and LTE can be had as options. It's got an accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensors, a magnetometer and a gyro, too. An 8-megapixel camera is stuck in the back, while a 2-megapixel shooter resides round front. ZTE managed to stuff all that and a 7,000mAh battery inside a svelte 8.9mm-thin package.
We got to spend a little bit of time with a prototype ZTE model, and found the hardware to be solid for a hand-built unit. Its aluminum chassis makes for quite a rigid device in hand, and the machined and polished bevel gives the V98 a very high-end look. The chromed plastic volume rocker, power button and screen orientation lock switch nestled in the plastic radio reception strip at the top of the device are decidedly less luxurious, however -- the travel of each was shallow, and the finish on the plastic appeared a bit cheap to our eyes. That said, the rotating magnetic aluminum door that reveals the SD card and SIM slots is slick -- far easier to open and close than the plastic port covers found on most other slates. There's also a 30-pin docking port on the bottom edge of the tablet, but ZTE informed us it'd be another month or so before the dock is ready for public consumption. Unfortunately, the V98 won't be available for purchase until Q1 of next year, but you can see if its worth waiting for in our gallery of shots below.

I?ve always been inspired by women in business. Particularly, mothers. Even more-so now, years after I?ve started up my own small business and began freelancing as a writer. (It still feels somewhat odd to type out those words). I?ve face hard truths and have had to make tough financial decisions.
When I first thought of opening up my own business, I must admit I didn?t give much thought to the added toll that the first few years of launching a brand (successfully) would have on my family. I only thought of the future. Our financial security for the future. The present got lost. A very tough lesson to learn on measuring what is really important in life. To me, anyways.
That?s when I began to look for success stories. To surround myself with other mothers who were entrepreneurs and working really hard to keep everything afloat and dare I say it, even become?successful. It?s no easy feat juggling work and home life, no matter how you?re working it. To me, making it big as an entrepreneur doesn?t just equal fame and fortune.
Being a?successful?mom?entrepreneur?is all about remaining financially aware and responsible. Staying on top of market and social/technological trends and developing a brand that respects the world we live in, inspires and supports other mothers. Leaders of innovative invention and?solutions?to real issues.

Caroline Freedman & Lauren McCollough of NurturMe
They saw a void in the baby food market. Everything was jarred, thick and heavy - often full of preservatives to keep it "fresh." Together, they created a product line of dehydrated powdered baby food made from organic fruits and veggies that reconstitutes itself with water, milk, or breastmilk. In it's first 10 months, NurturMe went big; sales sky-rocketed and orders started coming in from national chains like Target, Babies 'R' Us and Whole Foods. All that's next for these two mamas is the acquisition of their brand and they can retire for life!/toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#caroline-freedman-lauren-mccollough-of-nurturme
Eden Hertzog of New Moon Cookies
Just because she's my good pal doesn't mean she's not fair game. Conflict of interest? Nah. This woman means business and has been incredibly successful in it. New Moon Kitchen is a vegan brand of cookies that actually taste good. She went from operating out of an apartment with a gas powered confection oven plugged in the living room, making deliveries around Toronto; to running a large warehouse staffed with a bevy of full-time employees. Employees who all reap the benefits of four-day workweeks, in-house yoga classes and shiatsu treatments. New Moon cookies can now be found across Canada and the U.S. in pretty much every major grocery store and Whole Foods Market. Eden herself is the momma to a wily toddler and expecting #2./toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#eden-hertzog-of-new-moon-cookies
Laura Berg of My Smart Hands
Laura Berg has written the holy grail of baby signing. She may very well be the one responsible for the huge trend that it is now. What began a self-created curriculum for her grade 8 students to better help them learn through ASL (American Sign Language), quickly turned into the trademarked brand, My Smart Hands. An international company with over 100 instructors and going strong, Laura's vision and expertise has turned into a company that teaches parents and teachers how to sign with their babies; long before they can talk and to communicate with their hearing impaired children and students./toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#laura-berg-of-my-smart-hands
Belinda Takahashi of The Juno Company
As a classically trained musician, Belinda felt that the world of music for little ones was bereft of quality. Of this we know. Most kid's music? Just. UGH. So she started producing classical music videos and DVDs for kids, featuring her own original stylings. What were once home-movies, The Juno Company quickly became a TV series for babies and preschoolers and of course, the ever popular baby/toddler crack: apps./toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#belinda-takahashi-of-the-juno-company
Liz Lange of Liz Lange Maternity
As founder and Creative Director of her own maternity line, Liz is well known around the Babbles. If you're pregnant, been pregnant or even thinking about it, you've probably heard of her, especially since she began designing the maternity lines for Target and Nike on top of her own. Liz became pregnant just four months into the launch of her small business (then). Clearly that didn't intercept her success in becoming internationally known, even publishing her own book, 'Liz Lange's Maternity Style: How to look fabulous during the most fashion-challenged time'./toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#liz-lange-of-liz-lange-maternity
Michelle Cantrell of Venus Vision
I chose Michelle as a successful entrepreneur of absolute distinction. Her popular website Venus Vision is dedicated to promoting the self-esteem in women. ALL women of varying shapes, sizes, skin colour, religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds. I haven't seen nearly enough of this on the web, done with such well received success. One of her goals that stands out the most to me is Promoting Self Acceptance Amongst Women. I see Michelle as an entrepreneur who made it big because of the vital work she is doing in the on-line community for women and others, and to be able to make a living in doing so. She is a shining example of how much work, knowledge and organization it takes to start-up a business and keep it going./toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#michelle-cantrell-of-venus-vision
Cause Haun of See Kai Run
We all know about these adorable, qualtiy shoes for growing little feet, right? I may be partial given they are one of our favourite brands, but it's only because that's just it. The quality and the pricing can't be beat. Cause started her business in the basement of their home and her husband quickly caught on to her genius and joined the tiny shoe revolution. Today, See Kai Run shoes can literally be found anywhere. From online shops, to small boutiques and large department stores, Cause hit the big-time very quickly with her savvy brand and hasn't looked back since./toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#cause-haun-of-see-kai-run
Sonia Gupta of My Little Pakora
Sonia worked for nearly a decade helping lauch and develop start-up companies, so she definitely knew what she was up for when she decided to launch her own baby and toddler organic clothing line, My Little Pakora. This savvy mama began her business when her daughter was a mere 9 months old and has turned it into the solid company that it is today. Sonia is an equal opportunity employer. All staff food is subsidized and provided from the organic farm the the warehouse operates out of in India. They are also provided free medical care. My Little Pakora isn't just about clothing. It gives parents unique ideas, education, and practical support to help them live healthier for their own families and the world./toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#sonia-gupta-of-my-little-pakora
J.K. Rowling
She may not be an entrepreneur in the traditional business sense, but what does that all mean anyways? If you ask me, since she was named by Forbes as the first person to become a billionaire from writing books... she is one badass entrepreneur. She had a vision, she clearly had drive and determination and has most definitely created a world renowned brand. From a single mom who was on social assistance to becoming one of the world's most famous authors whose books have all landed major motion picture status, theme parks and any other product you can imagine?the Harry Potter brand has been there, done that./toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#j-k-rowling
Paula Deen
Y'all, I LOVE this woman. She is a true survivor. I'm sure not much of an introduction is needed here, as her face and gregarious, winsome personality is pretty famous. However, what you may not know is that Paula Deen didn't always have it so good. Death and tragedy early in life didn't get the best of her, neither did her debilitating agoraphobia. She went from (with the help of her two charming boys), operating her own catering company out of their home to publishing a bunch of top selling cookbooks, is a Food Network star and runs two swanky restaurants oozing the Southern hospitality and charm she is known for. Oprah is her #1 fan./toddler-times/2012/09/26/10-mom-entrepreneurs-who-made-it-big/#paula-deen

It?s no secret that the last four or five years have been challenging from an economic, technological, and global perspective. In this episode, I discuss five actions leaders must take in order to lead well in turbulent times.
When I speak publicly on this topic, I call this presentation, ?Shift: Leading in Turbulent Times.? I use the word ?shift? for two reasons:

While I was the CEO of Thomas Nelson (2005?2011), we experienced three significant changes:
Your industry has probably gone through massive change as well. Over the last few months, I have spoken to a vareity of groups representing several different industries:
And, of course, the phenomenon of social media has impacted every industry. And, if that weren?t enough, you are probably experiencing massive change in your own life.
Or maybe it?s quite so massive but still change?perhaps you are newly married, just had a baby, or received a promotion. Regardless, we are living in a world of unprecedented change. To lead well in this kind of environment, you must take five specific actions.
Real leaders thrive in turbulent times. They come alive. Why? Because it requires them to grow. They discover abilities and resources they never knew they had.
In 21 audio sessions, I cover everything I have learned about publishing in my thirty-plus years in the industry as a publisher, former literary agent, and two-time New York Times bestselling author.

When you or a loved one is afflicted with lymphoid cancer, you can really feel alone. One of the most important ways to combat lymphoid cancer is to keep as much of a positive attitude as you can. With so many advancements made in cancer medicine and treatments, many people recover from lymphoid cancer and many more go on living full lives.Lymphoid cancer, like all cancer, is caused by cells that multiply uncontrollably. If you have an iPhone 5, or any other unlocked iPhone for that matter, and plan on traveling to the United States, you may want to save yourself the hefty fees that come with roaming, and get a local, pre-paid or Pay As You Go SIM-card for your service. There aren't too many options -- American carriers love tying everyone into 2 year contracts -- but there are some worth considering.
Official word from T-Mobile is that they will be supporting the iPhone 5 just as they have any other unlocked iPhone. You can use it on a post paid or prepaid plan with no restrictions.
T-Mobile USA plans on carrying nano SIM cards that will be compatible with the iPhone 5 in mid to late October. If you're using an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S you can already pick up a micro SIM from T-Mobile. If waiting until mid to late October isn't an option for you, you can always buy a SIM cutter or cut your own down. It's hit or miss and we'd personally recommend waiting for the official one to hit.
While the iPhone 5 will work on T-Mobile USA, they could not confirm that the iPhone 5 would run on their LTE network. It most likely won't but you'll still be able to access their 2G network in most places, and their 3G/4G network in place they've begun supporting. (Most of T-Mobile 3G is on AWS spectrum, which is not supported by the iPhone.)
T-Mobile's prepaid plans start at $50/month and go up from there depending on how much data you need.
If you want to bring an iPhone 5 to AT&T you'll be out of luck when it comes to data if you want a no-commitment prepaid plan. While voice calls will work, AT&T has designed data not to be accessible. If you put a post-paid AT&T SIM into an unlocked iPhone 5 you will have access to data, which explains why CDMA iPhone 5's can use AT&T's network as long as the SIM you're inserting is from a contract account. AT&T uses IMEI information to detect account type and currently will not allow access to their data network on an iPhone 5 without a monthly plan.
If you're only in the United States for a short period of time and you're okay with only having voice service, it'll get you by but T-Mobile will almost always be a better option when it comes to using an iPhone on a Pay As You Go plan.
We're still polling the regional carriers and MVNO to see what other alternatives might be available. If you know of any, drop them in the comments, and we'll update as more and better information comes our way.
If you've had any luck activating an iPhone 5 on any other prepaid carrier in the United States, let us know in the comments!
