Federal foster care bill could prevent Muslims being placed with non ...

One step from the?Islamic Adoption Laws recently adopted in Spain. via Societal Health: H.R. 102 the Rehab and Ahmed Amer Foster Care Improvement Act ? Miami healthy living | Examiner.com.

In a facebook post dated yesterday, Mrs. Rehab Amer wrote, ?Be the voice for the voicelss by informing your representatives to co-sponsor H.R. 102 to protect all innocence nationwide.?

Mrs. Amer and her husband, Ahmed, struggled for two decades after losing three children to a state foster care system in the United States. The Ahmer?s were estranged from their children after they were put in foster care by the state of Michigan?s Child Protective Services, following the accidental death of their two-year-old son Samier in 1985. Samier suffered from a brittle bone disease and died from injuries that he suffered in a fall.

.

One of the Ahmer?s estranged children, Mohammed Ali, now goes by the name Adam Stamper after being raised by a Christian family in a foster home apart from his original Muslim heritage. He was one of three children taken away by the state after they accused Mrs. Amer of killing her son Samier. Mrs. Amer was unable to get her kids back and was also pregnant with her fouth child, Zinabe, who was taken away by the state only one day after she was born and after Rehab was already aquitted. The family says that years of neglect, estrangement, and abuse by foster care parents and state officials resulted in the children completely losing touch with their family, as well as their culture and religious background.

Mrs. Amer was able to turn her tragedy into a positive for families across Michigan, however, as she and her family saw the ?Amer Act? signed into law in December 2010. The law allows children to be placed with relatives in circumstances such as theirs and for special consideration to be given in regards to religion and culture. Nabih Ayad, a lawyer who filed a civil suit on behalf of the Amers against a Michigan foster home in their case, and many others have spoke about the injustices of the situation, as has the Congress of Arab American Organizations Spokesman Osama Siblani, who originally helped raise funds to aid the Amer?s in their struggle to fight for justice.

The Federal Amer Act Bill was introduced nationwide in June 2012. The bill, if passed, will allow children who are taken away by Child Protective Services the right to live with other family members, instead of being exposed to different environments that could differ from their upbringing. Another highlight of the bill includes keeping the children within the same religious environment that their parents had practiced as well.

This doesn?t bode well for young children born into Muslim families, particularly in honor beating cases.

How to build a very large star

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Stars ten times as massive as the Sun, or more, should not exist: as they grow, they tend to push away the gas they feed on, starving their own growth. Scientists have been struggling to figure out how some stars overcome this hurdle.

Now, a group of researchers led by two astronomers at the University of Toronto suggests that baby stars may grow to great mass if they happen to be born within a corral of older stars ?with these surrounding stars favorably arranged to confine and thus feed gas to the younger ones in their midst. The astronomers have seen hints of this collective feeding, or technically ?convergent constructive feedback,? in a giant cloud of gas and dust called Westerhout 3 (W3), located 6,500 light years from us. Their results are published in the upcoming month in The Astrophysical Journal.

?This observation may lift the veil on the formation of the most massive stars which remains, so far, poorly understood,? says Alana Rivera-Ingraham, who led the study while she was a graduate student in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto, Canada, and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Plan?tologie in Toulouse, France.

To study the formation of high-mass stars, Rivera-Ingraham and collaborators used high-quality and high-resolution far-infrared images from a space telescope launched by the European Space Agency in 2009 ?the Herschel Space Observatory. This telescope?s two cameras recorded light that is not visible to the naked eye, spanning a range from infrared radiation partway to the microwave region. Exploiting these cameras, scientists including Peter Martin, Professor in the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Toronto, created the HOBYS Key Programme to study the birth of very massive stars in nearby giant clouds of gas and dust in our own Galaxy, including W3. Research on HOBYS at the University of Toronto is supported in part by the Canadian Space Agency and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Scientists track the regions of the gas cloud where stars are about to form by mapping the density of dust and its temperature, looking for the most dense regions where the dust is shielded and cold. ?We can now see where stars are about to be born before it even happens, because we can detect the cold dust condensations,? says Martin. ?Until Herschel, we could only dream of doing that.?

Stars are born in the denser parts of gas clouds, where the gas gets compressed enough by gravity to trigger nuclear fusion. The more massive the newborn star, the more visible and ultraviolet light it emits, heating up its surroundings ?including the dust studied by Herschel.

?The radiation during the birth of high-mass stars is so intense that it tends to destroy and push away the material from which they need to feed for further growth,? says Rivera-Ingraham. Scientists have modeled this process and found that stars about eight times the mass of our Sun would stop growing because they run out of gas.

But astronomers do see stars that are more massive than this theoretical limit. And by looking at W3, Rivera-Ingraham and her collaborators have found clues to how this might be possible.

The researchers noticed that the densest region of the cloud, in the upper left of the image, was surrounded by a congregation of old high-mass stars. It is as if previous generations of large stars enabled the next ones to grow also massive, and close to each other. The scientists suggest that this is no coincidence: each generation of stars might have created the right conditions for another generation to grow comparably or even more massive in its midst, ultimately leading to the formation of a rare, massive cluster of high-mass stars

Like young high-mass stars, older stars also radiate and push gas away. If such older stars happen to be arranged favorably around a major reservoir of gas, they can compress it enough to ignite new stars. The process is similar to the way a group of street cleaners armed with leaf blowers can stack leaves in a pile ?by pushing from all sides at the same time. This corralling of dense gas can give birth to new, high-mass stars.

A large newborn star will push its food source away, but if it is surrounded by enough large stars, these can keep nudging gas back at it. With such collective feeding at play, the young star could grow very massive indeed.

Next on the to-do list of the astronomers is to test their idea by simulating the situation with computer modeling, by measuring gas motions, and by comparing their results with data from other giant clouds studied by HOBYS. Only then will they be able to discern the mechanism ?collective feeding or not? that gives rise to high-mass stars in these giant clouds.

(AP) ? Jarome Iginla spent 16 years chasing a Stanley Cup in Calgary.

The Penguins think he'll only need three months playing alongside the likes of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to grab one in Pittsburgh.

The league's hottest team continued its aggressive dealing late Wednesday night, acquiring the six-time All Star forward from the Flames in exchange for prospects and a first-round draft pick.

Pittsburgh sent the Flames the rights to college players Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski as well as the Penguins' first pick in the 2013 draft for the league's fifth-leading active scorer.

The 35-year-old Iginla waived his no-trade clause for the opportunity to join the Penguins. It wasn't exactly a tough sell for Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero.

"He wants to win," Shero said. "My expectation is that he'll be a really good fit in terms of the team and the guys that we have."

The trade marks the third big move by the Eastern Conference-leading Penguins ahead of next week's deadline. Pittsburgh acquired veteran Dallas Stars forward Brenden Morrow on Sunday and picked up burly San Jose defenseman Doug Murray on Monday.

While bringing in Morrow and Murray gave the Penguins depth and a physical presence around the net on both ends of the ice, landing Iginla provides Pittsburgh with firepower and the potential top-six winger the team has been looking for to pair with reigning NHL MVP Malkin and All-Star forward James Neal.

Shero declined to speculate where Iginla would play and indicated his team's newest winger is hardly concerned about how he will be used.

"He said he would help anyway he could, didn't care about role or who he was playing with," Shero said. "He'll accept any role that's asked of him by coaches or teammates."

Iginla is in the final year of his contract and will be an unrestricted free agent July 1. He was scratched from Calgary's lineup against Colorado, ending his consecutive games streak at 441. He has nine goals and 13 assists this season for the Flames, who are well out of the playoff picture. Iginla could be in Pittsburgh as early as Thursday, but almost certainly won't be available until Saturday's game against the New York Islanders.

Iginla led Calgary to the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals, but the Flames haven't been to the playoffs since 2009 and are currently in 14th in the Western Conference. Flames general manager Jay Feaster thanked the franchise's all-time leading scorer for agreeing to the trade to allow the rebuilding Flames to stockpile young talent.

"We as an organization owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Jarome," Feaster said, "not only for what he did for the franchise during his tenure as a player here and as our captain, but also for the fact that now as we recognize that despite our best efforts, and despite the work we've put in, we've fallen short of the goals we set for ourselves as an organization.

"We respect very, very much the fact that Jarome worked with us to enable this to come about."

In 1,219 career regular-season games in 16 seasons, all with Calgary, he has 525 goals and 570 assists. He has 28 goals and 21 assists in 54 career playoff games and has played for Canada in three Olympics. Iginla assisted on Crosby's gold-medal winning goal for Team Canada in the 2010 Vancouver Games.

The Penguins have won 13 straight heading into Thursday night's game against Winnipeg and have done much of it without Malkin, who remains sidelined with an upper body injury. Pittsburgh also placed defenseman Kris Letang on injured reserve on Wednesday with a lower body injury and No. 1 goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury is being evaluated after getting run over in a 1-0 victory against Montreal on Tuesday.

None of the injuries appears to be serious and if Pittsburgh can stay healthy over the season's final six weeks, they will be the prohibitive favorite to make it out of the Eastern Conference and vie for the franchise's fourth Stanley Cup.

The bold move to land Iginla only raises the stakes.

"The team on paper doesn't mean too much," Shero said. "We have to do it on the ice."

There are no such hopes ? this year anyway ? for the Flames, who hope forwards Agostino and Hanowski can one day be part of a new foundation to build around.

The 20-year-old Agostino was selected by Pittsburgh in the fifth round of the 2010 draft. The junior leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 15 goals and 22 assists in 33 games this season. Yale will face Minnesota on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The 22-year-old Hanowski, a third-round pick in 2009, recently finished his senior season at St. Cloud State, where he was the team captain. He had 16 goals and 13 assists in 34 games this season.

Falkland Islanders vote overwhelmingly to keep British rule

By Marcos Brindicci and Juan Bustamante

STANLEY, Falkland Islands (Reuters) - Residents of the Falkland Islands voted almost unanimously to stay under British rule in a referendum aimed at winning global sympathy as Argentina intensifies its sovereignty claim.

The official count on Monday showed 99.8 percent of islanders voted in favour of remaining a British Overseas Territory in the two-day poll, which was rejected by Argentina as a meaningless publicity stunt. There only three "no" votes out of about 1,500 cast.

"Surely this must be the strongest message we can get out to the world," said Roger Edwards, one of the Falklands' assembly's eight elected members.

"That we are content, that we wish to retain the status quo ... with the right to determine our own future and not become a colony of Argentina."

Pro-British feeling is running high in the barren and blustery islands that lie off the tip of Patagonia, at the southern end of South America. Turnout was 92 percent among the 1,649 Falklands-born and long-term residents registered to vote.

Three decades after hundreds died when Argentina and Britain went to war over the far-flung South Atlantic archipelago, islanders have been perturbed by Argentina's increasingly vocal claim over the Malvinas - as the islands are called in Spanish.

Local politicians hope the resounding "yes" vote will help them lobby support abroad, for example in the United States, which has a neutral position on the sovereignty issue.

"We're never going to change Argentina's claim and point of view, but I believe there are an awful lot of countries out there that are sitting on the fence ... this is going to show them quite clearly what the people think," Edwards said.

The mood was festive as islanders lined up in the cold to vote in the low-key island capital of Stanley, some wearing novelty outfits made from the red, white and blue British Union Jack flag.

"We are British and that's the way we want to stay," said Barry Nielsen, who wore a Union Jack hat to cast his ballot at the town hall polling station in Stanley, where most of the roughly 2,500 islanders live.

PRESSURE ON BRITAIN

Argentina's fiery left-leaning president, Cristina Fernandez, has piled pressure on Britain to negotiate the sovereignty of the islands, something London refuses to do unless the islanders request talks.

Most Latin American countries and many other developing nations have voiced support for Argentina, which has stepped up its demands since London-listed companies started drilling for oil and natural gas off the Falklands' craggy coastline.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the referendum clearly showed the islanders wanted to remain a British overseas territory.

"All countries should accept the results of this referendum and support the Falkland Islanders as they continue to develop their home and their economy," he said in a statement.

"We have always been clear that we believe in the rights of the Falklands people to determine their own futures and to decide on the path they wish to take. It is only right that, in the 21st century, these rights are respected."

However, officials in Buenos Aires questioned the referendum's legitimacy. They say the sovereignty dispute must be resolved between Britain and Argentina and cite U.N. resolutions calling on London to sit down for talks.

"This (referendum) is a ploy that has no legal value," said Alicia Castro, Argentina's ambassador to London.

"Negotiations are in the islanders' best interest. We don't want to deny them their identity. They're British, we respect their identity and their way of life and that they want to continue to be British. But the territory they occupy is not British," she told an Argentine radio station.

Argentina has claimed the islands since 1833, saying it inherited them from the Spanish on independence and that Britain expelled an Argentine population.

The 1982 war, which killed about 650 Argentines and 255 Britons and ended when Argentina surrendered, is widely remembered in Argentina as a humiliating mistake by the discredited and brutal dictatorship in power at the time.

But most Argentines think the islands rightfully belong to the South American country and they remain a potent national symbol that unites political foes.

Falkland islanders, who are enjoying an economic boom thanks partly to the sale of oil and natural gas exploration licences, say they do not expect Monday's result to sway Argentina.

"Argentina's stance on the Falklands will stay the same," said Stanley resident Craig Paice, wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan "Our Islands, Our Decision" as he waited to vote on Monday.

"But hopefully the world will now listen and know the people of the Falkland Islands have a voice."

As wives relocate abroad, husbands turn 'bachelors'

IF? you? are observant enough, you will notice him in markets -? an ageing, cosmopolitan? gentleman? haggling with the market woman pricing pepper,? fish,? okro and vegetable oil. His age, generally? 50 and above.

At other times, you see him in the high brow areas of major cities doing his shopping at the mall. If he is no longer in paid employment, he spends much of his time at the Club house.? There is? a club patronised by such elderly? live-alone men in old Bodija in Ibadan.

He lives a relatively? quiet life at home ? no chattering or running around of children.? Except, perhaps? for the occasional female visitor, that is for those still with libido, the house environment has an unnerving serenity.

The above scenario? typifies the changing times for the family set up, especially for fathers in middle and upper class families in Nigeria. The ageing Nigerian husband and father is facing a silent revolt? ? a gang-up against him by wives and children who have chosen to remain abroad.

The irony of it all is that it is the successful husbands and fathers? who are mostly in this bind.? Men took different routes to this common destination of loneliness in their twilight years.? Many had travelled abroad, often to Europe, the U.S. and Canada in their youth in search of the golden fleece, got married either to fellow Nigerians or ladies in their countries? of residence, acquired higher education, raised families and look forward to a life of bliss thereafter.

While some returned home immediately after their education,? others? stayed back? to also get their children educated before returning home. Some went abroad as staff of government agencies or international organisations with their families or raised families at their duty posts and either returned after their tenure or stayed back.

Some men returned while the wives stayed back ? different strokes. We have a large number of stay-back wives in Maryland, New York and Atlanta, among others. There is a third category of those who went abroad under the U.S. Visa lottery.

In all, going abroad were happy moments, then, and in some cases, all the children of many couples ended up going abroad. Many fathers of such children are no longer smiling. Yet, the rush to America and Europe continues.

With Nigeria?s worsening economic problems, those who never came back stayed put while the? problems forced the children of many returnees back to Europe and America where many are citizens. Meanwhile, the returnee parents are getting older as well as those who never went abroad but had children there.

The returnees and the locals are now in the same boat. In their active, younger days, many parents travelled abroad on vacations to see their children.? Now retired or approaching retirement age, many parents are either financially or physically not able to make the journeys again, while some refused to visit? to protest the children?s non- reciprocation.

Then the music changed, bringing about current woes of many men, in spite of some putting a bright face to it.? This time wives started travelling abroad, ostensibly to help take care of their grand-children abroad.

THAT was when husbands? problems began. You would think there was a National Conference for Diaspora-bound grandmothers at which a roadmap was distributed.? This is because experiences of many marooned husbands are similar: Initially when the first grandchild is born, the wife travels abroad and spends about? three months.? She returns home, spends about nine months to a year and when the second grandchild is born, she either spends six months or stay? back permanently. For those who come back after the second trip, the third is for permanent stay.

Welcome to the phenomenon of the husband ?bachelor?.?? What I have found amazing about this category of men living alone, following their wives relocation abroad, is that many are not contemplating taking a second wife. Even those in their early 50s who are still randy avoid serious relationships while those who contract temporary marriages soon abandon the venture.

I was to learn? that the decision against taking a second wife, for many,? is generally financially based, given the rising cost of education.? ?How do you expect me to start training a child from kindergarten at this age,? noted a 60- year-old Ibadan resident whose wife and children? are in the U.S. He says he draws inspiration from more elderly people who are in their 70s and in similar situation. He, however, concedes that he feels the absence of his family most during festive seasons when the loneliness hits him.? Some not so solvent again take consolation in the dollars and pound sterling from their Diaspora children.

Even then, not all are so lucky. It?s a matter of different strokes. There are those who take in house helps, often with unpleasant experiences.? An oil company retiree with a big house in upscale Lekki area of Lagos said house helps can be so unappreciative of your assistance and can walk out on you anytime.? He narrated an episode where the driver threw the car key at him in the middle of nowhere, knowing that he had not driven for a long time.

A common concern among elderly husbands living alone is the health hazard, the dread of falling ill in the middle of the night with no one to assist.? There was the story of a man in the Alagbole area of Lagos who had died three days before the door was forced open when he did not attend a Tuesday church meeting.? Many ?single? husbands say their wives are always persuading them to come over, that the wives? wonder why the husbands choose to stay in the hell-hole called Nigeria.

Although a few claim they enjoy cooking, many of the live-alone husbands? say they don?t find it funny going to the market.? Some husbands follow their wives abroad.

According to a FestacTown, Lagos resident: ?When the second invitation came for my wife to come to London, I told my son he has to send tickets for two, that I can?t stay back again?.? After six months, they returned home, but when the wife was to go for the third and extended stay, he declined following.? ?I find it very boring,? he lamented.? There are some husbands who refused to allow their wives travel abroad to help take care of their grandchildren.

One such husband insists : Why should they take my wife away, I raised them, they too must raise their own children.

The problem of absentee wives and lonely husbands is part an overall trend of separation in the family.? Economic factor, especially employment,? has also contributed to the dispersal of the family, even at local level? where, for example, a husband works in Lagos and the wife in Abuja,? with dire consequences for family cohesion.

Prof.? Adelani Ogunrinde, Vice-Chancellor, National University of Lesotho, while delivering the Second Commencement Lecture of Bowen University, Iwo on October 16, 2008 highlighted, almost in lamentation, this phenomenon of the dispersed family using his family as an example: He lives in Lesotho, the wife in Abuja and the children in North America.? He died about two years later, with the family still dispersed.

Dr. BISI OLAWUNMI, a lecturer, wrote from Bowen varsity, Iwo.

Common Core Standards: Teaching Argument Writing ? SimpleK12

The following is a guest post by Catlin Tucker, one of SimpleK12's presenters. Click here to watch Catlin's Webinars inside the Teacher Learning Community.

Common Core Standards: Teaching Argument Writing

Argument writing is one of three types of writing stressed in the Common Core Standards for English, history, and science/technical studies. As I transition from persuasive to argument writing, my focus is on using technology to engage and support students throughout the process. Tall order. Here are some of the strategies I used to teach argument writing.

What's the difference between persuasive and argument writing?
Persuasive writing aims to persuade the reader that the stated position is correct. The writer wants to "win over" the reader, often by appealing to emotions. In contrast, argument writing must present a strong claim and support that claim with "sufficient evidence" and relevant "valid reasoning."

First, select a high interest topic.
I selected the death penalty because Californians will be voting on this issue on the November ballots. It also went nicely with our To Kill a Mockingbird unit as I was able to incorporate informational texts related to this issue.

TED Talks: Get Kids Thinking
I showed Bryan Stevenson's TED Talk titled "We need to talk about an injustice" which explored racial inequality in the justice system as it relates to the death penalty.

ArgumentWriting1

Collaborize Classroom: Extend the Discussion Online to Engage All Voices
Using online discussions gives every student time to consider a complex question, articulate a position and learn from their peers' points of view. This exposure to other students' ideas is essential to understanding counterarguments

ArgumentWriting2

ArgumentWriting3

Face-to-Face Conversations: Exploring Differences
Complementing the online discussions with face-to-face conversations is important to developing real time speaking and listening skills. It can be a challenge for students to listen to an opposing viewpoint without interruption, but it is a crucial skill to cultivate.

ArgumentWriting4

Google Docs: Research & Organize Ideas
Teach students to find credible resources and analyze those resources to support their claims.

ArgumentWriting5

ArgumentWriting6

YouTube: Flip Your Explanation
I recorded a short lecture on how to write a timed argument essay and posted it to YouTube for my students. This gave them time to watch the lecture at their own pace.
